Most commonly nowadays is the rustic farmhouse or industrial look in urban areas. My favorite is the rustic farmhouse look. Most recently I walked into an apartment that seemed stuck in the 80's with all black curtains and furniture. Definitely out of times on the all black.
As for sliding barn doors they are very much in. You find them in the most affordable housing to the most expensive housing. Out of date looks: wall to wall carpeting, fake floral arrangements, and patterned wall paper. When it comes to design and home fashion the important thing to keep in mind is less is more. What I mean by that is all home decor needs to be tasteful and moderate. Too much of something makes it look more like a mix salad versus stylish pieces in a stylish home.
I find that your home is blank canvas you can pick the background you want on it if you want to gear towards rustic farmhouse than that's fine! All the pieces that you use to make it so must be carefully picked and planned. If you want to add wall paper to a room do so; make sure it fits the style and colors and do so moderately. Meaning don't place wallpaper all over the house. Maybe focus on bathrooms or certain bedrooms. This will actually make those rooms have a style and statement of their own.
