I was born in Colombia and raised in NYC and Florida. I had the opportunity to buy my first condo in 2003 and that is why I decided to take on real estate as a career. I love all things real estate; from the aesthetics, the floor plans, the unique architecture, decor styles, the locations, and the different personalities I meet from all walks of life. All those key features make my job fun, exciting, and something I look forward to. In my role I combine my experience in negotiating contracts, rental services, property management, commercial sales, international sales, and interior decorating skills. One of my favorite moments in my job is when I see a client's (s) face light up when the home is a match ( the "Awww" moment)! I will add my second favorite moment is when I can call to say, "you got the home!!" My husband and our family enjoy the variety of living in Orange County, NY You can go from enjoying the lovely green views and country living to the city life and its hot vibe. Family values are a strong core to our life it's promoted in the business. If you want to familiarize yourself with the NY everyday real estate life from a "REAL" (meaning NO filter) perspective; connect with me!!

Some comments from Martha Gaffney:

"I was born in Colombia and raised in the States. I have a gorgeous family; they keep me busy. I started in business in December 2021. The reason why I decided to go on my own was because I wanted to really put a spin and a feel for my own unique way of how I feel clients should be treated. I love real estate and how it can be challenging, intricate, fun, exciting, and its many diverse aspects. However I feel that there are so many brands out there; they they have lost the personal old fashion feel to taking care of the client and their needs.

I say my biggest challenge is competing with large firms in exposure. I love owning a business because it's like seeing a seed that you sow grow, develop and it makes you proud. Double points if its something you love doing; you do it with passion. My bread and butter are landlords and tenants so if you have a rental let's talk about listing it and getting it rented within your first month of listing with me! "

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

Not every customer is your customer. Some people don’t fit your criteria and you in theirs. You will be most happy as a business owner accepting that and taking the chances you get given instead of beating yourself up over what you didn’t sell or get.

Family
Martha, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I had a rough childhood growing up so I believe I get my resilience from there. Children that grow up in a rough environment have a choice as adults to go one way or the other. That means rebel towards not a good path or decide to mold themselves to become better people and learn from what they went through. Those children tend to mature faster and also dream big when they decide to make something of themselves.
