The Working Mom

What is the definition of the word mom? Dictionary.com defines mother as : a woman who has borne offspring; a female parent. The dictionary spells out a female giving birth, makes them a mother but is that the only thing that defines a mother?

I would say society does run on this definition. In other words most believe that your job as a mother starts and ends at giving birth. If we analyze a mother's role we can all agree with a big "NO".

A mother's role starts the moment she is pregnant. Pregnancy is crucial in the development of the baby in the womb. Moms not only sacrifice and make life style changes during these moments but must pull in the same weight of regular day to day activities while carrying a small developing human inside.

The birth of a child changes every woman's life and that is when a lot of the heavy lifting in the role of a mother comes to play. Day in and Day out during the life of that child; be it a baby, toddler, child, teenager and or adult a mother makes decisions that will affect her and that child's life forever.

The discomforting fact is, society has learned to make less of the rearing of a child and to entrust it to another woman and or organization that is not the mother; pushing the mother to work. A mother that does that is revered and a mother that doesn't is at times, frowned upon. This doesn't disregards anyone's family and or socio economic life; however that is really not how the natural cycle was planned when having a child.

The world has become so selfish. We live in a hot second life. Motherhood is not built around the now, the fake and nor can be it egotistical. At the end of the day it is hard for a mom to be all and all to everyone and raise a child. Moms are superwomen; however be careful your ego doesn't lead you to physical and mental exhaustion or the feeling you are not doing well enough. Why? Because a good mom is a full time investment.

Society has fake standards of what we need to be doing, look like, and working. The truth is motherhood is a test of learning to be less selfish, patience and growing up along with your child. At the end of the day no matter any of our job roles our most important one will be that of being a parent. We are raising the next generation. Happy Mother's day to all of us ever so lucky!!
